AXT, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:AXTI) 25% Dip In Price Shows Sentiment Is Matching Revenues

Simply Wall St·04/11/2025 10:13:42
Listen to the news

To the annoyance of some shareholders, AXT, Inc. (NASDAQ:AXTI) shares are down a considerable 25% in the last month, which continues a horrid run for the company. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 67% loss during that time.

Since its price has dipped substantially, AXT may look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x, considering almost half of all companies in the Semiconductor industry in the United States have P/S ratios greater than 2.9x and even P/S higher than 7x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

How Has AXT Performed Recently?

Recent times haven't been great for AXT as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like AXT's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 31% last year. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen the company endure a nasty 28% drop in revenue in aggregate. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 5.4% during the coming year according to the five analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 37% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this in consideration, its clear as to why AXT's P/S is falling short industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What Does AXT's P/S Mean For Investors?

AXT's P/S looks about as weak as its stock price lately. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of AXT's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
