Henderson Land Development (HKG:12) Has Announced A Dividend Of HK$1.30

Listen to the news

The board of Henderson Land Development Company Limited (HKG:12) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 20th of June, with investors receiving HK$1.30 per share. Based on this payment, the dividend yield on the company's stock will be 8.0%, which is an attractive boost to shareholder returns.

Henderson Land Development's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Prior to this announcement, the company was paying out 138% of what it was earning, however the dividend was quite comfortably covered by free cash flows at a cash payout ratio of only 52%. Given that the dividend is a cash outflow, we think that cash is more important than accounting measures of profit when assessing the dividend, so this is a mitigating factor.

EPS is set to grow by 97.5% over the next year. If recent patterns in the dividend continues, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 76% which is a bit high but can definitely be sustainable.

Henderson Land Development Has A Solid Track Record

Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from HK$0.671 total annually to HK$1.80. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 10% over that duration. So, dividends have been growing pretty quickly, and even more impressively, they haven't experienced any notable falls during this period.

The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. However, initial appearances might be deceiving. Earnings per share has been sinking by 18% over the last five years. A sharp decline in earnings per share is not great from from a dividend perspective. Even conservative payout ratios can come under pressure if earnings fall far enough. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this becomes a long term trend.

Our Thoughts On Henderson Land Development's Dividend

In summary, while it's good to see that the dividend hasn't been cut, we are a bit cautious about Henderson Land Development's payments, as there could be some issues with sustaining them into the future. The company is generating plenty of cash, but we still think the dividend is a bit high for comfort. We don't think Henderson Land Development is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
