Mexan Limited (HKG:22) Stocks Shoot Up 77% But Its P/S Still Looks Reasonable

Simply Wall St·03/11/2025 22:07:35
Listen to the news

Despite an already strong run, Mexan Limited (HKG:22) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 77% in the last thirty days. The last month tops off a massive increase of 160% in the last year.

After such a large jump in price, you could be forgiven for thinking Mexan is a stock not worth researching with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 1.9x, considering almost half the companies in Hong Kong's Hospitality industry have P/S ratios below 0.7x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

How Has Mexan Performed Recently?

For example, consider that Mexan's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for Mexan, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is Mexan's Revenue Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the industry for P/S ratios like Mexan's to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 13% decrease to the company's top line. The latest three year period has seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, a stark contrast to the last 12 months. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company, but investors will want to ask why it is now in decline.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 14% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this in consideration, it's not hard to understand why Mexan's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting this strong growth to continue and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Final Word

Mexan's P/S is on the rise since its shares have risen strongly. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

It's no surprise that Mexan can support its high P/S given the strong revenue growth its experienced over the last three-year is superior to the current industry outlook. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident revenue aren't under threat. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for Mexan (1 is concerning!) that you need to be mindful of.
