Standex International's (NYSE:SXI) Returns Have Hit A Wall

Listen to the news

If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. However, after investigating Standex International (NYSE:SXI), we don't think it's current trends fit the mold of a multi-bagger.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Standex International:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.08 = US$108m ÷ (US$1.5b - US$138m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).

Thus, Standex International has an ROCE of 8.0%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Machinery industry average of 12%.

How Are Returns Trending?

The returns on capital haven't changed much for Standex International in recent years. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 8.0% and the business has deployed 63% more capital into its operations. This poor ROCE doesn't inspire confidence right now, and with the increase in capital employed, it's evident that the business isn't deploying the funds into high return investments.

The Bottom Line

As we've seen above, Standex International's returns on capital haven't increased but it is reinvesting in the business. Yet to long term shareholders the stock has gifted them an incredible 244% return in the last five years, so the market appears to be rosy about its future. Ultimately, if the underlying trends persist, we wouldn't hold our breath on it being a multi-bagger going forward.
