Insiders Re-Evaluate Their US$1.75m Stock Purchase As Ambac Financial Group Falls To US$493m

Listen to the news

The recent 16% drop in Ambac Financial Group, Inc.'s (NYSE:AMBC) stock could come as a blow to insiders who purchased US$1.75m worth of stock at an average buy price of US$11.06 over the past 12 months. This is not good as insiders invest based on expectations that their money will appreciate over time. However, as a result of recent losses, their original investment is now worth only US$1.54m.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Ambac Financial Group

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Director Michael Price for US$1m worth of shares, at about US$11.21 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being US$9.71). Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

Insider Ownership

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It appears that Ambac Financial Group insiders own 2.8% of the company, worth about US$14m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
