Listen to the news

We wouldn't blame StoneX Group Inc. (NASDAQ:SNEX) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Glenn Stevens, a company insider, recently netted about US$1.8m selling shares at an average price of US$118. That's a big disposal, and it decreased their holding size by 16%, which is notable but not too bad.

StoneX Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive Vice-Chairman, Sean O'Connor, for US$4.1m worth of shares, at about US$104 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$124. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 2.3% of Sean O'Connor's holding.

StoneX Group insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Does StoneX Group Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. StoneX Group insiders own about US$542m worth of shares (which is 14% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
